Sofia, Bulgaria: A Hidden Gem of Beauty, Culture, and Affordability

Bulgaria is an intriguing gem that often flies under the radar for many travelers, especially for folks from the Philippines and the U.S. When I first arrived, I must admit my expectations were rather modest. But to my pleasant surprise, this country has completely blown me away.

Now, let’s talk about the people. This might sound a bit superficial, but I truly believe that one of Bulgaria’s greatest attractions is its stunningly beautiful locals. Don’t get me wrong; the architecture, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes are nothing short of extraordinary. Yet, it’s the people who add a vibrant pulse to the streets. They seem to embody the charm of Sofia, and you can’t help but notice them everywhere you turn.

I’m currently staying on Vitosha Boulevard, a lively pedestrian street filled with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and unique boutiques. As I stroll along, it feels like I’ve stepped into a fashion magazine—with gorgeous girls and guys strutting by who could easily be mistaken for supermodels. It’s an experience in itself just to people-watch here.

For those seeking an affordable getaway, Bulgaria is a treasure trove. My hotel in the heart of downtown is a comfortable $60 per night. Compare that to cities like London or New York, where a cramped room without a window can cost you upwards of $250! Here, I’m getting a cozy room in a vibrant part of town for a fraction of that price. Even in Makati, finding a hotel room at this price is nearly impossible.

The culinary scene is equally appealing, with a plethora of restaurants that cater to all tastes. Interestingly enough, Bulgarians have a surprising love for sushi! This culinary diversity adds to the charm of the city, inviting you to explore flavors from around the world.

However, I made a bit of a blunder by booking five days in Sofia. While the city is undeniably beautiful, I quickly realized that you can soak in most of its highlights within a day or two. Next time, I’ll be sure to venture beyond the city limits or rent a car to explore the stunning mountains nearby.

Bulgaria is also renowned as a winter destination, and I’ve heard whispers about how this country transforms into a breathtaking wonderland during those colder months. The thought of returning to experience that is certainly enticing!

So, if you’re considering a trip, Sofia and its surrounding areas promise a beautiful mix of culture, charm, and affordability. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be back to uncover more of what this enchanting country has to offer.

Scooting Through Sofia: A Personal Tour with Lubo

Meet Lubo- he was my scooter tour guide in Bulgaria. I signed up on Viator for a 2 hour scooter drive around city of Sophia visiting famous landmarks.

It was supposed to be a very small group- and no one showed up but me so it became a private tour. (My lucky day I guess).

I had the best guide who also happened to own the business. It felt more like two friends going around the city together. We drove past historical monuments, beautiful, churches and city buildings, discussed history and most importantly talked about life is in Sofia.

Lubo was so kind and fun and we immediately became quick friends. Towards the end of the tour, I had expressed that I wanted to see some sites two hours away. He told me he will ask his father if he could lend me his car. He was confident that he will not use it and that I will be allowed to use it.

Who would let a new friend drive their car 100 miles away from the city . Although the gesture was very sweet, I wasn’t comfortable driving outside of town.

If you ever visit Sophia, Bulgaria, I highly recommend my new friend Lubo.
